So far, the sand and rock has raised my pH from a 7 to an 8. My KH and GH have risen from about 0-1 to about a 5. The KH and GH are still low for cichlids, and I'm hoping the crushed coral will help. I have an Aquaclear 50 but there isn't a room to put the coral in. Right now, the filter contains a sponge, carbon, and biological media.
Aug 28, 2018· My method is simple, I skip the pea gravel, add water into the new filter about 1/4 of the way filled. Then S-L-O-W-L-Y pour the sand/glass into the tank, as to not crush the laterals. Then after all the bags are in, move to the backwash cycle to remove and rinse away any fine silts that come in sand/glass packing.

Sep 16, 2004· In the past, crushed coral was deemed the best choice for a substrate. Crushed coral is just that. Coral pieces, clam/snail shells, etc crushed up into 1/2" to 1" pieces. The benefit to this is that it is aragonite based, meaning that it is made up of a calcium base.
It breaks down and leaches calcium into the water column, and the snails can graze upon it if desired. Some keepers will mix crushed coral in with their sand or gravel substrate, or place coral in their filters to add to carbonate hardness in the water, supplementing the snails' need for calcium.
